Join us and the Capitol City Opera singers, on Tuesday, May 20th, for Dinner and a Diva, a night of delicious food and performances from Ludwig van Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux. In addition to an evening of music, you’ll enjoy a gourmet four-course dinner with wine, leaving you with an evening to remember. Your dinner will include a sampling of premium hors d’ oeuvres, fresh salad, choice of two gourmet entrees, decadent dessert, hot coffee/tea, and two glasses of fine wine, all for only $75 per person (plus tax and gratuity). Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar open at 6:15 p.m., and the dinner and show start promptly at 7:00 p.m.
“Roberto Devereux shows Donizetti at the height of his musical and dramatic powers. The opera’s story was inspired by a familiar, even notorious, historical incident, but, as in many stage works of the time, history is used merely as a springboard from which the operatic imagination can soar. The tragic confrontation between Queen Elizabeth I of England and her sometime favorite Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, ended with Devereux’s execution for treason. The dramatic premise of an older woman in power and a younger man at her mercy provided Donizetti with the opportunity to write some of his most theatrical music.”
