dinner AND a diva

DinnerDiva.jpg

Plan now to join us for our next Dinner and a Diva evening on Tuesday, July 17, to hear highlights from La Fanciulla del West. Puccini's La Fanciulla del West (“The Girl of the West”) is a three-act opera based on the play The Girl of the Golden West by the American author David Belasco.

It was commissioned by, and first performed at, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, on December 10, 1910, with Met stars Enrico Caruso and Emmy Destinn, for whom Puccini created the leading roles of Dick Johnson and Minnie. However, after Puccini saw Gilda dalla Rizza as Minnie at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in 1921, he remarked, "At last I have seen my true Fanciulla.”

Our singers for the evening are Elizabeth Claxton-Castillo, soprano; Timothy Miller, tenor; and Wade Thomas, baritone. They will be accompanied by Capitol City Opera’s music director Catherine Giel.

Though the opera has fewer of the show-stopping highlights that are characteristic of other Puccini works, it is admired for its impressive orchestration and for a score that is more melodically integrated than is typical of his previous work. Puccini himself deemed it one of his greatest works.

The dinner includes a sampling of premium hors d’ oeuvres, fresh salad, choice of two gourmet entrees, decadent dessert, hot coffee/tea, and two glasses of fine wine, for only $65 per person (tax included; gratuity separate). The performers from the Capitol City Opera Company sing between each course. The evening begins at 6:15 p.m. with a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres reception; dinner and performance start promptly at 7 p.m. Reservations are required. Please call 404-634-6268.
